These are some photo captures of important elements of the market. I chose a few that have a colorful variety of products. Each category of food have a variety of vendors. I don't know how food is handled. I don't know that the seafood is fresh versus frozen. We are 3 miles from the ocean, so ostensibly it could be fresh off the boats. It is in such abundant variety with occasional special options that it could be fresh off the boat. The interesting options are sting rays, frogs, I've seen rats, small sharks, huge variety of crabs, prawn, shrimp, shellfish, fin fish. They don't sell chicken the way we see it in stores. They don't sell pork like we're used to in the US. I have never seen a pig head or foot hanging in a US market. Most of the market is under an open air metal roof. It continues down both sides of a sidewalk along the road. There is a small shrine to Buddha within the market. I'd say the covered area of the market is 100 yards by 200 yards. It is covered because of rain and probably sun. This market operates in the evening 7 days a week. There is meat, produce, and prepared food. The prepared food consists of everything from tourist smoothies to pasties, soups, sauces, rice, sweet notions, pad thai, omelettes, waffles. The one guy who is cooking in the large ceramic urn is new to the market. I had never seen this method of cooking the fatty pork strips that I believe is called moo graab. I love the Penang Moo Graab dish. In the urn are hot coals from charcoal or something else. He hangs the meat from metal hooks along the top edge of the urn. Further down the page are the live animals. I'm not sure if the animals are intended as pets or food or both. I've seen lots of rabbits, birds of various types, fish and gerbils. Down near the bottom there is a little boy asleep among the merchandise. You almost don't see him there. Next to him, hidden from our view, are his toys - a saber, a shield and other superhero toys. |
