We visited Penang, Malaysia quite a few times while we were in Thailand from 2017-2019. It was the quickest visa run location. We could take the "van" or fly there. The van ride (if you survived) takes about 10 or 11 harrowing hours. The plane is an hour flight or an hour and a half to Kuala Lumphur. Penang is a fabulous tourist location. There are fun things to see and do. The food is fantastic especially the Indian food. There is an artist who put a bunch of Trompe L'oiel murals in various locations of the city. There was a large international community so the restaurants were varied. Many people visit on visa runs from Thailand. The city is very flat so it would be easy to travel around by bicycle. The roads were confined in the town but not too crowded compared to Thailand. There were restaurants with tables in the street. There is a mix of religions here with Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists seeming to accommodate one another. The Chew Jetty is a community in the water that caters to foreign tourists. The live in houses on stilts. The boardwalk leads out to the end of the community. |
Visa runs are quick overnight business excursions. There isn't time to do too much in the way of site seeing, but Penang is so pleasant it is easy to have a nice time. It's predominantly a Muslim city, altho there was a Hindu festival while we were there one time. The Hindu temple had a pink elephant motif. I didn't see any bars. There is a mix of business with tourism. There is a photo of welded anchors in one of my pages here. There is a post card shop. There are lots of restaurants. The streets are easily walkable.

Above is an image of black anchors from a craftsman near the Chew Jetty. Below are some shots of the Chew Jetty. At the entrance to the Chew Jetty is a Hindu temple. There are many interesting shops as you walk out into the water. It seems that the major transportation for residents was by boat, but that may be transforming to motorbike. | ||
