| These photos from a school trip Steve took to various sites in Chiang Mai in the north of Thailand. Thailand is about the size of California. The north has mountains and tea and strawberry plantations. The children on the trip were high school aged and spent 5 or 6 days experiencing different events. There were traditional wooden umbrella assembly and decorating. We visited a poorer school. We made traditional jewelry. We learned about an elephant sanctuary. We made a new north Thailand dish at a very fancy chef school. The scene at the tea plantation and the strawberry plantation was straight out of National Geographic magazine. Workers wore traditional clothing. Some workers were obviously very poor. The students seemed to enjoy and respect the experience. There was nothing special to do there but walk up and down and take pictures but you could clearly imagine this scene existing 1000 years ago. At one hut in the middle of the field a woman was cooking tea on a fire. Being on a bamboo floor this was extraordinary. There was some barrier to keep the whole thing from going up in flames. I'm not sure what it was made of. Nearby there was a little tourist town that sold varieties of tea and local produce. There were also a couple of restaurants. |
