One of my first memories of Thailand that comes complete with an image is drinking a coke at a restaurant near my AirBnB in BKK. I took a picture of the bottle with condensation all over it on a heavily worn table. It had the Coke logo written in Thai. That was an interesting clash of cultures for me - an American company's presence in Thailand. Bangkok was a place I got food poisoning a couple of times, both with the street food and the mall food. It's a very interesting city - a huge megapolis. 22% of the population of Thailand lives in Bangkok. Thailands borders are about the same acreage as California. I remember arriving in Bangkok airport and seeking a taxi. I went to the side of a van to enter and there was no door. Welcome to Thailand where they drive on the left! This was the first of many rude awakenings to left hand driving. |

The subway was gorgeous and clean and well organized. It's a great way to get around. There are temples in Thailand like there are churches and cathedrals in the US. There is a wide variety and they're everywhere. One cool temple on the west side was near the Mahidol University. It is 10-15 stories tall and painted pink. There are quite a few magnificent specimens squeezed in small neighborhoods. Overall Bangkok is very crowded. It can be quite dirty and sometimes nasty. |
