The area we stayed in told an interesting story. This was a fairly primitive low tech area. I got out on the streets for an early walk to get some photos. Early light makes for more dramatic scenes and intense colors.

Clearly, the pedicabs did a brisk business among the people and not just for tourists. There were campfires in many places. Some wore winter coats but many also wore flip flops.

There were dark-skinned people mostly. This did not appear to be a commuter society. These people lived and worked locally.

This trip was a break we took from our time teaching in Thailand. We did not plan far in advance and only stayed for 5 days.

	We spent most of our time in a neighborhood of Kathmandu called Thamel. The buildings were mostly 4 to 8 stories tall. The streets are very narrow. Buildings are right on the street. Cars can barely squeeze thru the street. Everyone seems to use the rickshaws. I assumed it would only be the tourists. There seem to be some buildings that are collapsing. There are beams that seem to support the structures from outside. There are temples and shrines all over the city in every area of every neighborhood. As I think about it, the area was very residential. There were no office buildings. The shops in the area met the needs of the community. There were foods, housewares, some art, restaurants, temples.
