After we moved to Maryland we both decided we loved Assateague State campground. There is also a National park of the same name, but the campsite is nowhere as good. The unique thing about Assateague is the wild ponies. The southern part of the island is called Chincoteague of "Misty of Chincoteague" fame. The park is great for tailgate camping. The washrooms were spacious. It includes an area to wash dishes, shower and charge up your phone. There is plenty of room between their campsites but there is very little vegetation as the soil is very sandy without much nutrients. The ponies will wander thru the campsite foraging for your food. Assateague is open for camping April to October. All the sites are a quick walk to the beach over a large dune created by the Army Corps of Engineers. The island is very flat. We have camped here since my teenage years. It seems like the perfect combination of rustic living with bath facilities. The sites are simple with a parking spot, a picnic table and a fire ring. |
