Step back just a little bit more... This is during the cherry blossom festival. These trees were a gift from Japan. They ring the tidal basin. It's a beautiful sight. At this point there was a flood on the river that went over the walkway in places.

There were heavy rains prior to our visit. The river went up over the trail and fence and park bench.

Across the channel facing the flood below is the famous open air fish market. We are fairly near the ocean and the Chesapeake Bay, so the fish is often quite fresh when it gets to the market. There are all sorts of odd fish at the market. The gangplank Marina is to be seen in the distance.

This is a 'duck boat' which travels on land and water. We took a trip on one of these when we visited Arkansas. They are former military landing craft used in WWII. There is a parking lot of them visible from the Red Line metro train near New York Avenue.

This is a view of the fish market in DC from the highway over the market. When I took this photo I was on a walking bridge near I395. The Gangplank Marina is behind the market. There are more photos of the market at night if you follow the link to the right.
